#MondayMentors: Imran Amed, The Business of Fashion

#mondaymentors : Imran Ahmed, Business of Fashion

Of all the people in London fashion, Imran Amed is one of the most inspiring. After attending McGill University, Harvard Business School and working at McKinsley, he had clearly achieved conventional success.

After experiencing serious burnout at McKinsley, however, Imran began to reevaluate his life and what he was pursuing. From being in this state, Imran went to a meditation retreat to regain perspective. During that time, Imran realized he needed to pursue his interest in fashion – after speaking to a monk in an airport about the purpose of life– no lie.

Upon returning to London, he founded The Business of Fashion – a blog he wrote in the evenings while running a brand new company. While this new company wasn’t BoF (it was a company that lent capital to young designers), the blog soon became more important than anything else he was doing.

Initially, Imran wasn’t taken seriously – he was an outsider who snuck into shows. He wrote thoughtful yet readable content that no one else was writing. Because of his persistence, thankfully, the Business of Fashion is what it is today (and now he can interview anyone he wants, and go to all the shows – of course).

5 lessons from Imran’s story

1. Stress / burnout could be a sign you need to change direction / take time out to reevaluate

2. Provide a unique perspective – but don’t stop at just that. Since BoF was created, other sites like have sprung up too. What makes BoF the best, however, is the way they have skillfully expanded into education and events – providing value to their audience in new ways that no one else does (or can).

3. Go after what you want – even if that means sneaking into a show or two.

4. It’s never ‘too late’ to switch your focus (if you want to).

5. Surround yourself with the best people and work very hard (Imran is highly educated and ambitious – which were undeniably important factors in allowing him to build such a successful company / brand in the industry).

That’s it for this week! I would love to know — who inspires you within the field of fashion journalism? Tell me on Instagram HERE, and see you next week!
