Welcome to Fashion Originators, a podcast hosted by me, Stephanie Irwin. Every other week, I interview game-changing fashion entrepreneurs. Each episode, THEY share their wins, losses and wisdom – all to inspire your career and personal goals.

As you have probably noticed, I’ll be trying something new for my Monday blog posts. Instead of featuring advice on fashion career dilemmas, I’ll be focusing on an industry figure who inspires me each week instead. In a way it’s #motivationmonday (just with a new @ handle to follow).

Today, I wanted to cover my favourite journalist / fashion partnerships guru, Eva Chen. After being a pre-med student at Johns Hopkins University, Eva pivoted into a fashion career. Personally, I first came across Eva through her writing in Teen Vogue within the health / beauty category. Mostly recently, she has built a niche for herself within the world of tech – Head of Fashion Partnernships at Instagram. On top of that, she even wrote a children’s book recently.

I admire Eva Chen for so many reasons, but the top few include:

-       Her ability to carve out a niche for herself, which others later copy (i.e: Derek Blasberg being appointed Head of Fashion Partnerships at YouTube, and Snapchat later making a similar move. Eva was the first in the role, and she proved its value).

-       Her ability to pivot and thrive in a new role (even if it appears very different from her previous. She was pre-med, yet followed her love of fashion anyways).

-       Her REALNESS on social media (anecdotes with her adorable family, her commentary on The Bachelor + her infamous work-bound #evachenpose).

-       Her adorable family (and pride about her adorable family). She proves that you can have an awesome career and hilarious kids too!

Regardless of one’s specific interest within the industry, I think carving out a niche, being adaptable, being genuine, and prioritizing family are four key things we can all be inspired by.

If you’re London-based, Eva will actually be at the Elle Weekender event. Will you be there? I can’t wait to attend her talk – and hopefully meet some of you afterwards!

I would love to know: who has been inspiring you in the industry lately? Send me a DM on Instagram @fashionoriginatorspodcast
