Hi.

Welcome to Fashion Originators, a podcast hosted by me, Stephanie Irwin. Every other week, I interview game-changing fashion entrepreneurs. Each episode, THEY share their wins, losses and wisdom – all to inspire your career and personal goals.

In the fashion industry, the question of ‘who’s your style icon’ comes up a considerable amount. While my answers have changed quite a bit over the years, I knew my admiration for Aleali May’s work would endure for much longer.

While I really look up to the likes of Denude and Claire Thomson-Jonville for style inspiration, Aleali May is THE queen of sneakers. Besides having 294k+ Instagram followers (thanks to her KILLER outfits), she’s the epitome of high fashion + streetwear (consulting for big brands and Hip-Hop stars). Her client list is also insane, having styled videos for the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Jaden Smith, Lil Yachty, French Montana… I could pretty much go on all day. In the past, she used to work for Virgil Abloh’s RSVP Gallery in Chicago. And if that’s not enough, she’s the first woman to collaborate with Nike on a pair of Jordan’s in men’s and women’s sizes.

In essence, she has an ability to prove her style-cred not just through having awesome Instagram pictures, but also through being a boss at her career and having an eye for fashion like no one else. If I’m ever stuck for outfit ideas or new ways to style myself, I always look to her Tumblr laleali.tumblr.com

Top lessons:

1)   You can break into the boy’s club – even if a certain style tribe seems impenetrable, being yourself and being different will help in the long-run. I know first-hand how obnoxious some ‘streetwear’ guys can be. Love how she has stuck it out!

2)   DOCUMENT – Aleali gained her success as a stylist because of her awesome blog alealimay.com

3)   Put yourself in the right places – working for Virgil in the early days had to have helped – no?

Thanks for reading! I would love to know — who’s your style icon? Tell me on Instagram @fashionoriginatorspodcast — see you next week.
